Parental Responsibility

In May of last year I published my first novel, it had been in the making for a very long time and was no secret to those who know me.  In fact, it had been in the making for so long I'm sure many who know me thought it would never materialise (me included sometimes)!!  Anyway, the reason I'm telling you this now is because over the last few days I have been wondering about the rights and wrongs of my reactions to certain peoples' indifference to my efforts.
We all have people in our lives whom we would expect would never be uninterested in us.  Obviously, I'm talking about close family here, Parents, Siblings, Aunts, Uncles etc.  At the same time we all have people about whom we wouldn't care if they were unmoved or not or indeed, people from whom we expect nothing more than indifference.
Unfortunately when the person from whom we expect nothing more than indifference is also a person from whom indifference should never be acceptable we are left in a quandary.  How then are we supposed to feel - this person delivered no less than we expected and yet we are left disappointed as this person should, by rights, care deeply about us and therefore we would be justified in anticipating their support and encouragement.
Enough of the cryptic, the person of whom I speak is my mother.  She has not congratulated me on the publication of my first novel, nor has she asked what it's about.  She has neither read it, recommended it to any of her friends, nor has she asked me how it's going.
For those of you who know me and don't know me alike you should be aware that I would expect nothing less of my mother.  This is not new behaviour on her part, I have long believed my mother's perception of parental responsibility towards me never stretched further than the practical.  And, I must add, in practical terms she has always provided.  We were always well fed, clothed and housed, cut knees were patched, hair was cut, fingernails cleaned etc.  Even after we all left home she has been there financially whenever any of us have been stuck.  However, emotionally, spiritually and psychologically, although my sisters may feel differently, I was very definitely surplus to requirements.
I am now 45 with two fabulous boys of my own, and I know, without a single second's doubt, I will always be there in support of them in whatever they do.  If either of them follow me into writing (unlikely at the moment as getting either of them to read is like pulling teeth!) I will be first in the queue on release day, I will buy two dozen copies and I will shout out about their efforts to everyone I can find - whether they want to hear me or not!
I am proud of my boys and I will tell them as often as I can.  I know their Dad feels the same but for my part my boys will ALWAYS know there is someone fighting their corner.  Someone who will back them up forever, no matter how old or independent they are.  Someone who loves them unconditionally and completely.
Even when I'm dead and gone they will know I was the one who brought them into this world, I was their foundations and they will have my love and support for their entire lives, whether I am physically present or not.  This is the fundamental right of every child.
To have to live life without these things is a trial we may learn to live with but we never get over.

Great Reads, recommended.

Just a few books I've read recently which I would thoroughly recommend - enjoy. xxx

GRAY JUSTICE
by Alan McDermott                     http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gray-Justice-Tom-Novel-Book-ebook/dp/B00G4LJE74

My review - I loved this book, it was action packed and had great pace. The characters were believable and the plot plausible. I loved the way the ending could lead to absolutely anywhere. This book is well worth a read and I will be recommending it to my friends.

THE BLAKE MISTAKE

by I C Camilleri                            http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Blake-Mistake-I-C-Camilleri-ebook/dp/B00CH149J8

My Review - The Blake Mistake is a really gripping read. When I read The Blake Soul I enjoyed it but this one far surpasses it. The storyline twists fit perfectly with each of the main character's difficult personality traits making this book a really interesting and plausible read. Ms Camilleri manages to make her reader feel for each of her characters and therefore need to find out their fates. I will definitely be recommending this book to friends.

THE SCREEN CONSPIRACY

by Maxwell Black                       http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Screen-Conspiracy-Maxwell-Black-ebook/dp/B009X0RX1M

My Review - Very good pace, plausible plot and solid believable characters. Would definitely recommend this book as one well worth reading.

A PERFECT SETUP

by Douglas Wickard                  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfect-Setup-Sami-Saxton-Novel-ebook/dp/B00E9BT8LI

My Review -  I deliberately read this book first even though I know it to be the sequel to A Perfect Husband to see if it could stand alone. It can, whilst there are numerous referrals to the earlier book and the ending leaves little doubt another book follows this section is perfectly able to stand alone. The characters develope well and the plot has many twists without being overly complicated or becoming unreal. I have minor reservations about a couple of things which I felt weren't fully exploited - possibly being saved for book three? Regardless, this is a really good read, it's pacey, edgy and wholly believable. I would definitely recommend this to all my friends.

THE PYRAMID LEGACY

by Clive Eaton                           http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Pyramid-Legacy-Clive-Eaton-ebook/dp/B0085LXSAK

My Review - The Pyramid Legacy is a very entertaining read. The storyline draws the reader in and doesn't let go. Parts of the storyline are a bit 'Star Trek' for me personally as I'm not a big sci-fi fan but the book had plenty more to offer. The main characters are well written and believable, especially Ben with all his doubts and insecurities. my only complaint, and I admit, it's a purely personal preference, is the lack of conclusion. For me every book should stand alone, even if part of a series, and I was disappointed at the end when I discovered I'd have to wait for the next book to find out the answers. That said I would still highly recommend this book to sci-fi and non sci-fi fans alike, it's a great story well written.

THE BONES OF ODIN

by David Leadbeater                  http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Bones-Odin-Matt-Drake-ebook/dp/B006AVJGU8

My Review - This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It has great pace and wholly three dimensional characters. The storyline may be a little farfetched (a bit Indiana Jones-ish) but it's very well written and extremely entertaining. Matt Drake is surely every woman's dream - strong, resourceful, hard as nails AND he cares!

I paid £0.99 for this and it was definitely money well spent, I will certainly be reading more in the Matt Drake series.

A Little Gentle Introduction

I often wake up in the night or the early morning with an arguement brewing in my head.  Usually it's not aimed at anyone in particular just life in general and will tend to center around something I heard or saw the day before.  Often the ensuing arguement keeps me awake as my imagined opponent invariably doesn't listen to me.  So I've decided to start a blog in the hope that venting my anger/opinion/exasperation and even love and admiration on this blog will negate the need for my nocturnal ramblings and thus allow me some much needed sleep.

I feel I should probably warn the reader at this point that it is entirely possible my opinions will, at times, be disagreed with, even disapproved of but, as the very apt quote to the right demonstrates, my opinions are all my own and you are all perfectly entitled to your own.  In short, I will not be offended by your disagreement, voiced or otherwise and I hope none of you will ever be offended by my remarks.

Of course, it hasn't escaped me that I may well just be swaping arguing with myself for blogging to myself but hopefully the transistion will prove interesting, if only to me and just maybe there are people out there who will choose to follow my blogs and hopefully comment here and there with opinions of their own.  I look forward to long and stimulating chats.

Back soon.  Claire x
